Considering the cover in isolation, I admit that I probably wouldn’t touch this with a barge pole, and the synopsis isn’t terribly appealing either. Even without the similar covers I would probably have made a sub-conscious connection with Trainspotting, which is not a book I particularly wish to encounter again.
Those issues aside, you do make it sound fascinating…
But I enjoyed most your ascerbic reference to the missing tartan and shortbread!

As a serving prison officer I thought the scene was set very close to the reality that we work in. You work with the dregs of society for a small amount of pay the threat of violence is never far away . The temptation to someone on a low pay is to supplement their wages with an additional income. Contraband is always an easy option as the book states (staff are rarely searched) and drugs and mobile phones are at a premium. Easy money for the so inclined. Enjoyed the book immensely highlighting the shortcomings of low pay in the publc sector (low pay=low standards)
